About Chicken Song

What is a chicken song?

No it’s not he song that you dance to at weddings. When a hen lays an egg, she will invariably sing a song of clucks and cackles. The loudness, frequency, and volume will depend to a small degree on breed, however all in some way will let you know they have produced an egg. There are many theories as to why the hens do sing this song. The theories vary from proudness, to calling predators away from the nesting box, and several others.

For me, and subsequently for the blog I count the chicken song as the way I took my first steps to self sustainability. We live in the suburbs , we do not have acreage, in fact we “homestead” on a little under a ¼ acre. Our first flock was a big deal, we started with four, grew to 11, and then lost them to varying age and disease related deaths, took a break, and now have four again with plans to expand this coming spring.

We love to watch the chickens forage, we love to hear them sing. I have read many posts about how annoying the hens are when they lay and how much noisier they are than roosters. I have never felt anything but humor and joy for their song. It is a daily reminder of the “aliveness” of our yard. It is also a reminder to leave thought and enter the present moment.
